type='text'>worldofthought

worldofthought
FILTERING IN I.C.T.
The relationship that exists between technology and education is best described as blood relation. in as much as man want to know more avout himself anf the tings around him (knowledge-product of education) the tools he needs are no where far away from the use of available technology (from the Garden of Eden through to the stone age to the computer age)
the role of modern technology in modern edkucation is very inneglectable. it will be very impossible to try seperating technology from education. they completely depend on each other for support.
in the would today, many schools have made provision for online enrolment and courses irrespective of ones location or culture privided the internet is available to the individual. this definately is a handicap to those unable to surf the internet.
at an appreciable level, african countries are embracing modern technology without fear and intimidation to their culture and gbelieves.
there is hardly any african country that can boast of not having any technological innovation or modern communication in it as a state. a state of this identification will not be qualified to belong to the african union (A.U ) or the economic community of west african states(ECOWAS ) if in the west. boasting of such a handicap will be a trade mark of being excluded from the global village. the pressure mounted on certain government to allow media, press freedom is an expression of the desire to belong to the techological globalisation by the citizenry. through modern communicaton, media developomental information can reach those who need it most at the right time.
students in most schools are madde to learn or "chew" formulea, theories annd principlesas though they are incapable of generating their own. it must not be misunderstood that ther is no need of learning what already exist as a stepping stone to new discoveries. they are generally discouraged by this practice or made to believe that there is nothing new they can do with their talents.
using the internet as a reference material and resource centre by most tertiary institutions in africa is a very commendable act.
genrally giving room to thee use of modern complicated tecnologies in education is the filtring in of ICT to replace the traditional "see me do, do with me, and do alone method of teaching and learning in africa.
this is not to suggest that, the heritage and culture of africa should be thrown into the dust bin of history. that will be a great diservice done to prosterity. attempting to make western culture our own instead of a helping aid to development is the worse thing a nation can do to herself. these tools (I.C.T.) available can not be done away with altogether, however we can use them to modernize our culture and improve upon our living conditions and standards as individuals, as a nation and as a continent.
the most blessed and ressourced continent in the world is africa.but the problem is with leadership that lacks vision and is intimidated by the name of western coukntries, with a united minority the frontline of a divided majority is easily coquered into their teritories. that is the more reason why the european countries deemed it fit to form the E.U . to get a united frong. having come this far in development as individual countries leaving most african countries thousand of years behind, european countries still deek to surge forward. this should give a clue to african leaders that unless ICT is kused to connect the whole of the continent it will still be a divided majority. africa is suffering from "constipation of ideas and diarrhoea of words". politicians talk more than the work they do. and infrustructure development suffers most.
the brain drain is another illness the continet is suffering from and there seem to be a thin line between the difficulty of african countries and the solutions to this problems.
what the brian drain means is that african medical practioners are capable of doing anything that is developing the western world. it is an utmost posibility that the african united front can stop all medical practitioners from entering into europe as a policy adopted by the united front of africa.
ICT is always there to help. allowing ICT and its advantages to tickle in to the continent in all phases (Novice/traditional technology, Intermediate/semi computer litterates ot those who surf the net for messeges and information and the Advanced /computer wizards who programme, create webs and those who blog etc.) will be a culture the continent can adopt that prosterity will forever bless this generation for.

DAWA KEEP FIT CLUB APPEALS FOR ASSISTANCE (01-05-06)
a delegate of youth from the dawa keep fit club visited the premises of radio Ada and made their demands made known to the public through the media, that members of their communities should assist them in discharging their duties that will enable them achieve the clubs objectives.

Some members and the executives of the Dawa keep fit club payed a cutessy visit to the radio Ada media house as part of the (may day celebration) holiday and to make known their intentions as a club.
the club named DDawa brotherhood keep fit has been in existence for the past two years and has a membership drive of sixty(60) as against thirty(30) with which the clup was started.

The chairman Mr.. Benjamine Ntiamoah who spoke to the radio Ada new team said that it is their objectives to set and maintain very good sanitation in the locality and to intensify the fight against the deadly HIV/AIDS. he also added that the physical fitnes of members of the club is also an important aspect of their activities that is geared towards achieving the objectives of the club. he also noted that the physical fitness of the members is what can ensure that they have a strong force to achieve their objectives.
some activities and achievements he stated as the organisation of dawn troting and clean up exercises to climax them and then the provision of dust bins at vantage points in the town to facilitate the collection of polythene waste. they therefore made a passionate appeal to the market women especially to put their wastes at the appropriate places.
the cheif and elders have not been left out in discharge of their duties. a request has been made to the chief to send out his town crier to draw people's attention to the benefits of sanitation.
it is sad to note the secretaray added to see waste dumped around dustbins provided instead of into them. he made an appeal through the media house to the market women to help the cause of the club to make Ghana a polythene free country. he also appealed the the dangme west district assembly , the member of parliament ningo prampram constituency and NGOs that have sanitation at haeart to come to their aid the help them achieve their set objectives.

YOUTH WAGE WAR ON FILTH AND DISEASE (04-05-06)
a section of youth have decided to join the vvice prez in his campaing against indiscipline centring on sanitation to embark on a clean up exercise to rid the market community of filth.
after the vice prez of Ghana decleared his war on indiscipline centering on sanitation, the massege has gradually filtered to some of the citizenry of some of the Ada communities.
in a market community kasseh (pronnounced-- cah seh) in the dangme east district of the greatere accra region of Ghana, a group of youth numbering thirty (30) have enbarked on an intensive clean up exercise. their major concentration was on desilting the draions which happen to be the first of its kind after the drains were constructed seven month ago. this having been the first most of them were realy faustrated and nearly gave up on the exercise when it seemed it was only water sasche that is there to be clearde. besides domestic gabage and plastics, five different feotus found in the drains was one of the disgusting sites to meet the eyes without mentioning the "take away polythenes" and their contents.
the market women who were doing prisk business by the drains and those who sell at the bus stops did not see it necessary to join the exercise.
it is estimated that almost all the filth that has chocked the drains are created by the traders. the low turn out was a big blow to the youth because the town crier was made to send the information to all and soundry.
the youth is however calling ong the local authorities to help formulate laws to abait the indiscipline and to adopt some the policies of the AMA to order the close of all shops until 11:00am once a month for the clean up exercise to take place.
also present was some of the executives of local branch of the GPRTU and the former assemly man.(Ben nii Ayiku)

APPEAL TO SUSPEND HOUSEMANSHIP check on the number of pupils who did not come to school, a total of one hundred and five (105)pupils were abscent out of the total school population of three hundred and sixty-two.
according to the head master Mr. david kwesi ocansey, some parents do not take up their responsibilities thus causing the children to go fishing or to the sea side to struggle for fish at the expence of the education. as if this is not enough some parents even ask their childrenc to give them money for their up keep. these practice having started getting root in the community is possing a great threat to accademic work especially on tuesdays and fridays. To them, recreational facilities are of secondary concern to most rural dwellers all over Africa because of what they consider as their needs. Besides providing what the average individual consider as elements of developments, rural development is also the provision of the necessary tools of change and development thus information and education.
Different people of various religious, cultural and geographical locations have different things they will call development at different times where as other people may have problems with accepting it. For instance, in a typical African setting puberty rite is the best thing children must have to qualify them to become adults but people from this same setting, dwelling at a different place other than their home town will have problem with it because of what they have come to learn and believe in their new settlements.
Rural developments have become a problem to many governments because, the citizenry, (the majority) do not share the same development ideas and agendum with policy makers who usually or most often exclude the populace from the decision making process.
The problem arises when the majority don’t see themselves as ingredients to solving the problems around them. Most people have the perception that it is the responsibility of the central governments to develop the dwelling places of inhabitants in the state and it is the duty of the citizen to enjoy what has been provided. (This must be disproved by the help of journalists and it becomes a challenge to the journalist and the use of ICT). Reason – “the populace voted the ruling government into power or leaders are responsible for their followers”. The majority of Africans are rural dwellers and the literacy level is appreciably low. This is also one of the big challenges.
While a computer literate sees technology as a positive development the indigenous individual sees it as a threat to his culture and livelihood. Example the traditional herbalist sees modern day medicinal practice as against what they have inherited and threatens their source of income.
Undoubtedly any computer illiterate knows more about the negative effects of ICT than s/he knows about the positive and developmental ones.
Telecommunication is so distant to most rural dwellers that the use of computers, mobile phones and television seems to be a privilege other than a right to most of them. Those who also possess the knowledge of these things always make it look like a very delicate and complicated tool to those who desire to learn, thereby discouraging them.
Technology and development should be inseparable because they depend on one another to improve, how ever some attempts are been made consciously or unconsciously to bring to the fore all those who will need modern day technology and its associating benefits leaving behind some portion of the people usually due to geographical location. These groups in question are being left behind because they also contribute to this divide by their attitude, cultural believes and inadaptability.
Unfortunately the human resources that need ICT for development tend to see to it as a privilege due to how the media practitioners present ICT to their consumers at certain points in time. The views of the rural folk are what really pose a challenge to the ICT journalist. The journalist need to t break the ice in order to harness the potentials hidden in the “village” i.e. places where ICT have not gained roots. The primary challenge to journalist in breaking this ice is to get ICT in any form modern to those who need it.
Undoubtedly radio seems to be the best option in Africa. Majority of the rural dwellers have radio sets. Mobile phones are no more privileges as they used to be in some few years ago.
Fishermen along the coast of Ghana for instance, communicate with their colleagues offshore calling for help or pass on information that is worth passing on. Farmers also cross check the price of the commodities they produce over long distances before they go to the market places to trade.
But the challenge here is the infrastructure available to the journalist. This is really the challenge ICT and the journalist is facing.
In solving this problem the central governments of most African countries should build a good communication network in the country so that people in the remotest part of the country should get access to telephone by wire or not.
There are people who are cut off from contact to the print media and to some extents the electronic media. Others have no access to electricity, where mobile phones could be charged if any or to run computers if any attempt is made to make them get access to it. ICT can be used to help develop solar panels as cheap as possible to reach to all who will need it. The journalist will have the make the researcher aware of this need through any medium available.
In reaching out to the rural poor who need modern ICT as a tool to cope with modern day live, the journalist must always make modern ICT a consumable commodity. The jargons of ICT must be made understandable to the Some people agreeably cannot be reached by road and if at all not easily, this poses a bigger challenge to the radio journalist who will have to make radio programmes especially on radio more interesting to catch their audience.
Acceptably, radio is now the biggest medium through which people can be reached so that ambitious journalists who want to want help in solving the problem of slow rural development should rule out the possibility of starting with a computer to an appreciable level so that the basic technologies available now like the radio and mobile phones can be used to help solve the problem.

BY:
ANUMU EMMANUEL
RADIO ADA

what people expect

WHAT DO PEOPLE EXPECT FROM THE JOURNALIST
The modern day journalist is expected by all stake holders to play leadership roles in developing, running, and maintaining state policies. The journalist plays the role of elders in modern day Africa. In the olden days information is given to the adult to be broken to the audience of a town because he is believed to treat it as a confidential as possible.
Today, the journalist is the first to access information or is the first to break the news. In what ever way it is discovered the media is contacted to make it known to a lot of people.
This is what makes the demand on the journalist very great. It obviously calls for responsible journalism where information needs to be treated as professional as possible.
The confidence listeners, viewers and readers have in journalists is so much that a lot depends on him to maintain this confidence and trust. People always see what they are told by journalists as the truth. A lot of mayhem can be caused when the journalist misleads his viewing, listening and reading community. A journalist who does not live up to expectation brings disrepute to his media of practice.
When the credibility of a journalist becomes questionable he loses his value with respect to what ever he does in the capacity of a journalist.
A journalist is the salt of the news world where he must not lose his value in terms of what he sends to the consuming public.
Most often than not the private life of the journalist is threatened by the hazardous nature of his job, e.g. covering the war front news, disaster new or rioting rally or demonstration. When this situation arises, the credibility of the media house and type the journalist is representing either places him/her in an advantage or disadvantaged position.
He may be treated well or maltreated due to the history the people have about him or his outfit.
It therefore lays emphasis on building a positive history as practicing journalist so as to rip the benefit of being transparent in whatever is done in times of discharging ones duties.
The spirit of volunteerism in Africa is getting missing and losing its value so drastically that it’s hardly easy to get something done out of the spirit of volunteerism other than for the benefit one will gain.
In the olden days of a typical African setting people help in cooking at funerals gathering fire wood and fetching of water.
Today, not every body will go to a wake keeping because of its negative effect on economic activities and development but because the will to serve voluntarily without expecting rewards.
The absence of a reward for works done is what puts people off and not what negative effects they see in doing the work.
The journalist is therefore challenged by doing a voluntary work of making himself a scape goat in all areas of leadership. He is expected to be a leader of examples and pacesetting in all endeavors of life. In playing the role of a leader of the olden days he must be ready to serve. a leader as is said is to serve and not to be served.
“do you know or can you tell me what happened in that government or that”
“I don’t know”
In this case you have failed in advance as a journalist in your work.
It holds some iota of truth that a journalist must be a moving encyclopedia. That is why he is expected to update his knowledge using every means possible where it is undisputedly modern and sophisticated ways where (ICT) is not left out.
Cross checking news items and ideas is a practice that builds and develops a mature, responsible and dedicated journalist.
A leader is one who can change bad situations to make his followers allay their fears.

welcome to my world

Beautiful things are yet to begin happening in this tiny world of mine where everyone can access me.
